Langley Castle To Mark 200 Years of \'Frankenstein

Historic Langley Castle is preparing to stage a chilling theatrical production this autumn, as it helps celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s world-famous, Gothic horror novel, Frankenstein.

Langley Castle, which has been on the Northumbrian landscape since 1350, will be hosting a reimagining of Mary Shelley’s classic storyline, performed by North East theatre company, Timeworks Theatre.

This theatre group is known for celebrating various anniversaries and historical events, by creating productions based on a wide variety of pieces, from comedy to drama and from children’s stories to horror.

Their production of Mary Shelley’s masterpiece, named Frankenstein – a Gothic Creation, has been written by North East writer, John Seymour, and will commemorate the author’s life, as well as the novel itself. It marks the novel’s bicentennial by retelling the story of Dr Frankenstein and the hideous and monstrous creature he fashions whilst attempting to create a living and intelligent life-form. The underlying theme will be true to the question Mary posed: ‘What it would be like if man had the same power of creation as God?’

This theme will resonate and provoke responses, in a world in which cloning, genetic engineering and the unlocking of the secrets that DNA holds are never out of the news. Seymour’s interpretation will portray both the terror of the novel’s plot, as well as key events in the life of a writer who breathed life into such a terrifying creature.

Taking place spookily close to Halloween, on Friday October 26, this event can be attended at a cost of just 13.50. A fully-licensed bar will also be available throughout the evening and a pre-theatre menu is on offer to those who want to dine before the production.

A two-course meal will cost £15.95 and a three-course meal £19.95. Tickets and meals should all be booked in advance.

Langley Castle’s general manager, Carla Robinson, says: “We are always incorporating new experiences into the Langley offering and this theatre production is a classic example of this.  Langley has evolved, yet stayed relevant to people, over the course of six centuries and longer and is enjoying a wonderful reinvention at present, thanks to the huge desirability of a castle wedding and the massive popularity of Game of Thrones - a series set with backdrops remarkably close to that of Langley Castle.  The Frankenstein event will add yet another dimension and allow people to appreciate Langley in an entirely different way.”

To entice more people who have always wanted to pop into Langley, but never dared, the castle has special rates on accommodation to coincide with the Frankenstein production.  These cover three levels of comfort within the castle’s ‘CastleView’ accommodation and range in price from £65 per person, to £85 per person, inclusive of full Northumbrian breakfast and a Langley Battlements Tour on the morning of Saturday October 27. The rate is based on two people sharing a double room. To book or for more information, visit or call 01434 688888.
